How do I change the color of work items in the planning board?
The green and red background color for backlog items and bugs is too bold. It makes the backlog hard to read, particularly on a projector in planning meetings. Is there a way to change these colors?

As we use graphic files for the cards, there is only a limited choice offered: red, blue, green, yellow, orange and brown. You can change the color use by creating a configuration mapping file for your project. Please refer to this blog post for more information about mapping files.

I second that request.
The only reason I'm considering this product it for planning meetings and the current UI is very cluttered.
The background should be while and state should be denoted by font color and controlled via the config file.
BTW, pointing to that blog post is not very helpful since it doesn't contain detailed information about what can can can't be configured and how.
Having a configuration file is very a powerful feature - it's a pity we can't use it just because the documentation is limited. -

Colors are specified under the CardStyles section. You should specify a colour for each work item type. The colour choices are green, yellow, blue, red, orange and brown.
Here's the default configuration for the MSF Agile 5.0 process template:
<CardStyles>
<CardStyle WorkItemType="User Story" Color="green" />
<CardStyle WorkItemType="Issue" Color="blue" />
<CardStyle WorkItemType="Task" Color="yellow" />
<CardStyle WorkItemType="Bug" Color="red" />
</CardStyles>
We are planning an update to the overall look of work items in a future release. -

Could we change the graphic files to get different colors? Can you tell me where these files are located so we might experiment with this?
-
-
Yes, you could. The graphic files are located under 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft Team Foundation Server 2010\Application Tier\Web Access\Web\UrbanTurtle\Resources\Images\RoundedBars'. We do not provide support for this kind of modification however.

The planning board is set for a design overhaul next release. Check out the preview right here.

Thanks. For now I've decided not to mess with creating image files for alternate colors, though it looks like it could be done easily enough. I did try some of the other colors that are there (brown, orange, ghost).
I'm looking forward to the next release. The new design looks great. -
