Status of a workitem in the planning board

How would you like to see this displayed? Would the colored spot representing the state on the task board be sufficient? This is probably what would use the least screen real estate.

That and maybe a textual description?

Is there any planning for this item. Another thing we miss is a button for the commited state of a user story. There is now an icon to approve the item by the product owner, but not for commited by the team

Since the planning board view allows for three configurable fields (actually two, since one of them is the title), you could configure the state field to be displayed.

As for commitment, we had actually thought of adding an icon on the work items, but we decided that it didn't make much sense to commit to individual work items. That's why there is a Commit link on the iteration panel on the left-hand side of the planning board. This link appears when the iteration is selected and when there are work items that can transition to the configured Committed state.
