Unused display fields should be configurable to display nothing rather than the default of "(not configured)"
In some item types I don't need to use all of the display fields. Instead of displaying "(not configured)" allow for specifying that it should be blank.

This has been implemented a few months ago.

You don't. It just doesn't display anything when the field is not configured. Simply remove the field configuration from your mapping file.
